Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Mississippi is saddened to announce that the Commission on Marine Resources (CMR) special session set for 4:00 PM, Wednesday, May 9, 2018, has been cancelled. The reason for the cancellation is conflict with services for Jimmy Sanders, DMR Artificial Reef Bureau, who died suddenly on Saturday and will have visitation for those wishing to attend at Bradford-O’Keefe on Howard Avenue in Biloxi from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
Jimmy was a true conservationist who worked effectively to enhance marine habitat. The inshore and offshore reef structure that has been his focus since Hurricane Katrina is a testament to Jimmy’s work. He worked with CCA and CCA’s Building Conservation Trust to enhance Cat Island Reef last February. CCA is currently engaged with Jimmy and his colleague, Rick Burris, to start a Lionfish removal program from our reefs. In addition to working with CCA, he also was a resource to the Mississippi Gulf Fishing Banks who released these comments (with credit to Darlene West) about Jimmy that are so characteristic:
Mississippi Gulf Fishing Banks, the Department of Marine Resources and the world lost a great man this weekend. It is with great sorrow that we mourn the loss of our friend Jimmy Sanders. The Fishing Banks had a long and close friendship with Jimmy, and he will be truly missed. Jimmy always had a smile on his face and could brighten anyone’s day. To know him as a friend was an honor. To lose him so soon, simply devastating. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family.
CCA likewise sends our condolences to Jimmy’s wife and children and to his extended family, and to his colleagues at the Department of Marine Resources.
The two primary items on the special session agenda – oyster relay and haul seines – will be included in the agenda for the regular CMR meeting on Tuesday, May 15, at 9:00 AM at the Bolton Building, 1141 Bayview Avenue in Biloxi. With the haul seine issue on that agenda, CCA hopes members and other interested recreational anglers will attend and present public comment. Members and Prospective Members are also invited to the Ship Island Chapter meeting planned Thursday, May 10, at 6:00 PM, at Chandeleur Brewing in Gulfport.
